Planning a Puppy Litter

When we plan a litter of puppies, there is a lot that goes into the selection of the stud dog. We consider the qualities of our GCH female. Knowing that you get all qualities, and hoping to make the selection that will bring out the best of both dogs in the breeding, our first consideration is always for health, then temperament, then physical structure. We painstakingly research pedigrees, using the SCWT Health & Pedigree database and other resources, to select a potential mate for our girl. We learn about genetic markers for inherited diseases in the pedigree and in that particular dog, we learn if the dog has sired prior litters and if those were Champions, and we use the information to select a breeder with whom we would like to make an alliance. In discussions with the potential stud owner, we learn the family history of the dog, his behaviors and his "attitude." Then we receive his medical history and recent medical test results. We share ours. Annual health testing is important in tracking developing changes in a dog's health, and in making wise decisions in selecting potential breeding partners. After an agreement is made, we wait. Our girls come into season twice a year. But it isn't always at a good time for our family. Puppies take dedication and lots of time. Using the Puppy Culture development program, we hand raise and bring each puppy through its development stages, loving and teaching the puppy to live in the big world, and training the puppy to be happy, friendly and well-adjusted with its new family. We hope you'll choose to wait for a Matrix puppy, and we are glad to discuss adding your name to our waiting list for a healthy, happy Matrix Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier puppy.
